Wilson database switch

Several of the Wilson databases are now available on the Ebsco platform. The links in LibData will be changed today.
The remainder will be switched as they become available on Ebsco, probably the first week in January.

Spring 2012 Registration Guide

There's a hard copy of the Spring 2012 Registration Guide at the reference desk. Clipped to it is the list of assigned registration times. They are in the bottom of the plastic trays by Ref1, on top of the manila folders.

Harvard Business Review article

Heads up that a hard copy of the HBR March 2007 article, Managing Difference: The Central Challenge of Global Strategy, is at the reference desk in the assignments folder and a pdf version of the article is saved on Ref1 in Karen's folder.

This is an article used in a current class, but our copy of that volume is either missing or damaged (can't remember which).

Using Infosearch Article Search Off Campus

If you use infoSearch off campus to search for articles, you will be prompted to log in to your library account when you first click on an article link. Logging in to your library account authenticates you as an MTSU user and directs you to the desired article record.

Students who haven't obtained an MTSU ID card aren't in the Millennium database and therefore can not log in to their library account, even though they use Pipeline and can access specific library databases from off campus.

The workaround I suggest to students is to use the "Articles" tab search instead. That will authenticate students using http://ezproxy.mtsu.edu and currently enrolled students shouldn't have a problem.

I probably didn't get the technical descriptions correct, but I hope this makes sense. I IM'd with five separate students today who had this problem, so it's not an isolated one. Chime in if you have a better solution or if I said anything incorrect.

English 1020 Scavenger Hunt

Mr. Collin Olson's English 1020 students might ask you for help with a tricky scavenger hunt assignment. It's not a new assignment, so some of you may have encountered it before, though I never had. A copy with answers is in the "assignments" folder in the tray at the reference desk.

How will you know you're looking at Mr. Olson's scavenger hunt and not something for another class? It's 36 questions and involves tasks like finding how many copies of a certain book exist in a foreign country (worldcat), or finding how a certain scholar describes a particular term (check infosearch for a book by that person, probably a reference book).

D2L troubles in the library

If a student asks for help with a D2L error, check what browser they are using. D2L doesn't like IE9, which is what we have in the library. Have them launch Firefox, and that may fix the problem.

Popular Reading

We discussed using the catalog to search the popular reading collection in a meeting several weeks ago. While you can't limit by a "popular reading" location to do a completely accurate search, two browsing options are:

  • Search popular reading in infoSearch. Narrow by community tag (not all inclusive).

  • Browse the RSS feed of new bestseller titles. This feed shows all the popular reading titles as they arrive.

Can't find it? Suggest a Resource

On the top of the 'Resources' page, you'll notice a link to 'Suggest a Resource'. You can use this form if you find that we don't have enough resources (or current resources), in a subject area. This will help to identify holes in the collection that may need to be addressed.
The 'Suggest a Book' form is still available for specific book suggestions.

Assignments at the Reference Desk

Just a reminder that there is a manila folder at the reference desk, in the 3-level filing tray by Ref1, titled "assignments." It contains copies of and answers for current and previous library-related assignments, "scavenger hunts," etc.

At the top of the folder now is an answer key to Amanda Moore's Legal Writing and Research assignment. Please don't give answers to students, but use the answer key as a guide to directing students to the next step.

ENGL 3030 Scavenger Hunt

FYI: Students in Dr. Bradley's ENGL 3030 class have apparently been asked to find the following article as part of a scavenger hunt:

Dawson, Hugh. "Recovering Rip Van Winkle: A Corrective Reading." ESQ. 40.3 (1994): 251-73.

We have this in print, but not online... or so it seems. The same piece is also available via Literature Resource Center as a reprint in 19th Century Literature Criticism, but it doesn't show up as an online option in Journal Locator because it's technically in a book.

Student Jobs in the Library

Here is some information about student jobs in the library that may help you answer questions.

Blank application is at http://library.mtsu.edu/administration/StdApp.pdf

Completed application with attached class schedule should be submitted to the Service Desk. Applications are purged at the end of each semester.

Academic Service Scholarship and work study students are placed first. It could take a few days to a couple of weeks into the semester before we reach into the pool for other applicants (we're still placing scholarship students right now).

University 1010K

Just a reminder about University 1010K (University Seminar). Regardless of the instructor, the class Web site, syllabus and assignments are at http://www.mtsu.edu/~studskl (easily located by Googling MTSU study skills).

Students can't always clearly articulate their question, but you can interpret most questions by looking at the Web site, the syllabus, and/or assignment. The current assignment is a scavenger hunt about the Web site itself: http://frank.mtsu.edu/~studskl/scavweb.html

Yes, an idea more productive than writing this blog post would be for someone like the instruction librarian to coordinate with the course coordinator so the assignments are clear and effective, but our instruction librarian hasn't done so.

LibData Information Types: Videos & Films / Digital Audio and Video

There were two very similar information types in LibData: 'Videos & Films' and 'Digital Audio and Video'.
I consolidated all streaming media collections in the 'Digital Audio and Video' information type.
Please let me know if you have any questions or any other suggestions.

Windows 7

Welcome to the world of Windows 7. Here is one important tip about W7 in the Library.

If a public computer seems to have disconnected from the public printers, reboot and then wait at least two minutes before selecting a printer. The script that connects the computer to the print server takes a few minutes to execute, so all the printers may not show as soon as someone logs in.

Do you know of anything else you can add to the collective wisdom?

eBook Collection update

Ebsco Technical Support lowered the timeout time from 30 minutes to 15 minutes. What this means is that when a user navigates away from a book, it will be 15 minutes before the book is free for another user. In my testing, it was actually about 25 minutes before the book was available.
When a user tries to open a book in use, they are prompted to 'Hold' the book. I was so surprised to find the hold feature doesn't work. Below is the response I got from Ebsco tech support.
I sent a frank e-mail to Ebsco tech support, Ebsco sales, and Lyrasis about how unacceptable these platform limitations are and asking that we have unlimited use on every book in the eBook Collection until the platform is upgraded to include a working Hold feature for every book and the ability to close or logout of a book.
In the meantime, I hope this information helps in your transactions with patrons.
~MEP

Hi Mary Ellen,

That particular eBook is not available for download, which may be why it is not showing up as a 'Hold' for you. Since it cannot be downloaded there is no official 'checkout'... all checkout is done on a temporary basis behind the scenes. Essentially, when a user is reading a book in the browser they have the book 'checked out' for 10 minutes. At the end of this 10 minute window the book will be released to the public again or, if the book is still being accessed, it will be 'checked out' again.

Since the checkout is not one of days but one of minutes the hold option doesn't do anything... the book will be available when the current session is over. I hope that makes sense but if you have any questions about what I've written please let me know.

If you have any eBooks that are available for download that are also showing incorrect hold behavior please let me know and I can take another look.

Web of Science - Arts & Humanities Citation Index

This has been added to the following subject guides in the 'Find Articles in Other Databases' section:

History
English Language and Literature
Music
Anthropology
Philosophy
Art
Theater and Dance

You can see the subjects and journals included in this index on the Thomson Scientific web site.

Web of Science has no full-text, but it is article-linker enabled. The citation analysis tools and thorough indexing are the real benefits of this database.

More from the vendor website:

With Arts & Humanities Citation Index, you can:

-Find high-impact articles from peer-reviewed, influential journals.
-Uncover relevant results in related fields.

-Discover emerging trends that help you pursue successful research and grant acquisition.

-Identify potential collaborators with significant citation records.

-Integrate searching, writing, and bibliography creation into one streamlined process.

Why choose Arts & Humanities Citation Index?

-Comprehensive and Relevant Coverage: Every journal included in Arts & Humanities Citation Index® has met the high standards of an objective evaluation process that eliminates clutter and excess and delivers data that is accurate, meaningful and timely.

-Cited Reference Searching: Track prior research and monitor current developments, see who is citing your work, measure the influence of colleagues' work, and follow the path of today's hottest ideas. Navigate forward, backward and through the literature, searching all disciplines and time spans to discover information with impact.

-Easy Author Identification: Locate articles written by the same authors in a simple, single search. Find the right author, right away — eliminating the problems of similar author names or several authors with the same name.

-Insightful Analysis Options: Find hidden trends and patterns, gain insight into emerging fields of research, and identify leading researchers, institutions, and journals with the Analyze Tool. You can also capture citation activity with Citation Report, instantly creating formatted reports to view vital citation information for individuals or institutions.

-Specialized Access Points: Find even the most elusive or complex data with unique indexing options. Title Enhancements add clarifying terms to titles that are obscure or hard to find. Implicit citations are references to works not formally footnoted in journal articles.

eBook Collection - one step forward, two steps back

Apparently the browser compatibility problem that was affecting links from the catalog (with the old Netlibrary domain) is now fixed.
However, it was discovered that the new platform does not allow you to 'close' or 'logout' of a book, to enable access by another user (like the patron in front of you). That means that once you go to the record for the book in the eBook Collection platform, it will be tied up for about 30 minutes after you navigate away from the page (confirmation of exact time is pending).
Also, Ebsco seems to actually be enforcing the limit on simultaneous users. Users are more frequently getting a message that a book is in use.
Lastly, please let me know if I should include the eBook Collection in the search results from the 'Article Search' tab on the front page. Before we start to wrestle with semantics, please note that several of the journal databases in the search profile already include monographs, e.g. Cinahl.
Sorry for the frequent and long e-mails about this transition. At least you can be glad that you only have to read them, and not write them.

Problem with Netlibrary links from the catalog

There seems to be an issue with eBook Collection (NetLibrary) links from the catalog. It may be a browser-compatibility issue, although that's not confirmed.
If a patron has a problem, try another browser or search for the book from within the eBook Collection search screen

eBook collection (formerly NetLibrary)

The NetLibrary platform has migrated to Ebsco. In LibData it's now called 'eBook Collection (formerly NetLibrary)'.
The records in the catalog still work and still say 'NetLibrary An electronic book; click for access'.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Proquest and Explorer

Some versions of Explorer do not handle the Javascripts in the new Proquest platform very well and may end a user's session. In the meantime, I've put a note in LibData to use Firefox or Safari.
It should be fixed in the next couple days.

Students needing summer database access

If an unenrolled graduate student or an undergrad with special research needs (including one working on an Incomplete) needs access to the library for the summer, direct them to this form, which allows one semester of library access including off-campus database access. It requires a faculty advisor's signature.

Clarification: This applies only to MTSU students who are enrolled for the next semester but are not paying tuition for the current semester (usually summer).

Digital Collection Trials

[Blogger went wonky and just sent a draft post]
There is a trial to ARTstor on the database trials page. ARTstor is a "Digital Library offers more than one million images in the arts, architecture, humanities, and social sciences with a suite of software tools to view, present, and manage images for research and pedagogical purposes."
There will be a webinar on this resource. Please vote for your preferred time by the end of the day Thursday, 5/12/11 at http://www.doodle.com/wg44uv6dh2q6yhsx.
I also extended the trial to Britannica Image Quest and there are several trials for Adam Matthew Digital products.

Finding books in a foreign language

There is no good way with our new catalog to do a search for books written in a foreign language. The existing language limit does not rule out translations, so a blank search (using * as your keyword) with a Chinese limit in the opac (i.e., Advanced Catalog Search) will bring up items in Chinese AND items translated from Chinese.

Infosearch (a.k.a. Encore) will not allow you to do a blank search. You have to type something into the box before you can narrow your results by language. Even still, this post-search language limit is not perfect and also does not rule out translations.

I have talked to Jo and Beverly about this. Apparently both versions of our catalog are using the 041 MARC field to determine the language, but should instead be using the 008 field. ?? Jo has sent a request to Ann F. to sort out how we can do a true "language limit" using the 008 field of the MARC record. Stay tuned...

Also, another problem is that only some languages are available as limits in the OPAC. There are no options for Japanese, Hebrew, etc. Jo has also requested that Ann reconfigure the Advanced Catalog Search's language limit to include all of the languages in our catalog as available limit options.

In the meantime, should you find yourself needing to find some introductory readings in a foreign language, here's an another strategy. I accidentally stumbled upon a subject heading for Japanese Language -- Reader that seemed to satisfy my patron.

ありがとう,
Jason

Cinahl Plus with Full Text

We've upgraded to Cinahl Plus with Full Text. It includes more journals, 250 books, more retrospective coverage, and a few more journals with searchable cited references. It should show up in Journal Locator tomorrow. Comparision chart.

Here's the info from Ebsco's site:

"CINAHL® Plus with Full Text is the world's most comprehensive nursing & allied health research database, providing full text for more than 770 journals indexed in CINAHL. Of those, 464 are not found with full text in any version of Academic Search™, Health Source® or Nursing & Allied Health Collection™. This authoritative file contains full text for many of the most used journals in the CINAHL index - with no embargo.

The database also provides full text for more than 275 books/monographs. With full-text coverage dating back to 1937, CINAHL Plus with Full Text is the definitive research tool for all areas of nursing and allied health literature.

CINAHL Plus with Full Text also provides indexing for more than 4,600 journals from the fields of nursing and allied health. The database contains more than 2.8 million records dating back to 1981. Offering complete coverage of English-language nursing journals and publications from the National League for Nursing and the American Nurses' Association, CINAHL covers nursing, biomedicine, health sciences librarianship, alternative/complementary medicine, consumer health and 17 allied health disciplines. In addition, this database offers access to health care books, nursing dissertations, selected conference proceedings, standards of practice, educational software, audiovisuals and book chapters. Searchable cited references for more than 1,350 journals are also included."

Trials to Sage Reference and Cinahl Plus with full-text

Two new trial are on the Database trial page.
There was a brochure for Sage Reference at the Reference Desk, so I got a trial. Sage will sell collection packages as well as individual titles.
We're evaluating an upgrade to Cinahl which would add some periodical titles for a reasonable cost.
Please let me know what you think.

Peer Reviewed Book

There is a new library scavenger hunt for Smith English 1020 which among other things asks students to identify a peer reviewed book on their selected topic. Until clarification can be obtained from the instructor I am satisfying this request with a book on their topic published by a university press. Thanks. Sharon

Worldcat local is a quick way to search

Encore and Millenium are so slow right now you can get faster results with Worldcat Local (mtsu.worldcat.org). For some reason it is able to retrieve the records from our system quite quickly. Not good for everything but works great if you have something specific you're looking for. Mayo

Student evaluations of faculty

I had a IM/call at the reference desk from a faculty member who was trying to locate the summary results of his students' classroom evaluations of his teaching. These reports apparently used to be kept on reserve in the library. We no longer have these.

Now, these summary reports can be found on Pipeline > RadierNet > Faculty Services > Evaluation Results Website. See the screenshot below. (Note: Faculty members can only review reports for their own classes.)

GPO Access is on the way out

Did you know that the GPO Access Web site is about to be replaced by FDSys?

In typical government fashion, the undated FAQ says the switchover will occur "mid-winter," with no mention of a calendar year.

Claimed enhancements include the ability to:
  • Easily search across multiple publications or collections of government publications from a single search box.
  • Perform an advanced search against robust metadata about each publication from a single advanced search page.
  • Construct complex search queries using advanced Boolean and field operators.
  • Refine and narrow searches by applying filters, sorting search results, and searching within search results.
  • Retrieve individual government documents and publications in seconds directly from each search result.
  • Utilize enhanced help options including context specific field level help and a searchable online help system.

Computer Support Desk

As Christy mentioned in an earlier e-mail, Jerrica Williams is the daytime supervisor at the Computer Support Desk. Her email is jlw7m[at]mtmail[dot]mtsu[dot]edu and her phone number is 904-8542. Al is the interim night supervisor (yay for us).

Also, oversight of the computer support area has passed from Ann to Mike Wheaton.

Journal Passwords - an exception

You may remember that we used to have a long sheet of journal passwords in the reference binder. This was problematic in terms of maintenance and licensing since access to many titles was not intended for campus-wide users. It has led to a general collection development policy to avoid providing online access to sources that cannot be accessed through IP authentication. Recently an exception was made at the request of a faculty member to set up access using username/password for Forum journal : the journal of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The publisher gave permission for the password to be shared. The password is listed on a sheet behind the blue database passwords sheet in the Reference Binder. It can be given to those who ask for it. Since it is linked to a library subscription it is intended for use by MTSU students, faculty and staff, and walk-ins. The journal is also listed in Journal Locator.

Library Maps and room numbers

I have added room numbers to the library maps, so now when a person asks where room 446 is, we can easily tell them.

Sage subject-specific collections

Sage 'improved' their interface and apparently did away with the subject-specific limiter (http://mtsurefstaff.blogspot.com/2009/07/sage-full-text-collection.html).
On all the pages where a subject-specific Sage collections appeared, it's been replaced with the Sage Journals Online resource in the 'Find Articles in Other Databases' category.
Sage journals are widely indexed in other databases like Academic Search Premier, ERIC, PsychInfo, etc., so most users are going to get to a Sage journal through an Article Linker link anyway.
Sage Journals Online now appears on the following subject guides and Databases A-Z:

Business Communication and Entrepreneurship
Criminal Justice
Education
Electronic Media Communication
Health and Human Performance
Journalism
Nursing
Political Science
Political Science
Psychology
Social Work
Sociology
Speech and Communication

Instant Messaging Tip

I spent several minutes chatting with a frustrated student today who was having trouble opening an e-reserve file. I finally realized the student is in the RODP program and was stopped at the ezproxy screen.

So, just a reminder about the possibility that you're chatting with an RODP student who is off campus and not familiar with that mode of access to our materials.

Also, we spent several minutes hung up on the fact that I asked if the student was "in the library" and he or she said "yes." Yes, he was in the virtual RODP library, so to speak, but not physically in the MTSU library, which is what I wanted to know. So, when you ask a question, be specific!

New ProQuest Platform

Amy and I have run into some trouble while navigating Historical Newspapers and American Periodicals Series on the new ProQuest platform. I'm compiling a comprehensive list of problems to give Mary Ellen. If you have a question or see a problem in the new platform, post a comment here and I'll add it to the list.

I can tell you that as of Friday, Jan 14, off-campus access to Historical Newspapers and American Periodicals is not working.

Federal Reporter redux

As you all will have noticed, my calculations for the shelving were off and we have plenty of space for the Federal Reporter, albeit at the end of the ranges. Apparently my original calculations were correct and my mid-shift panic was misplaced.

My proposal: Let's shelve them at the end of the reference range, leaving a gap between the end of the 900s and the start of Federal Reporter. Then we can put a dummy book at the location where the series should fall, directing them to the back of the ranges. This will take care of things for the short term.

This approach will let us wait until the Learning Commons is fully designed before we decide whether to keep the volumes. If we don't need any additional real estate for the Commons (as expected) we can have a discussion at the end of the semester on whether to keep the volumes. If so, students can shift during summer to fit them back in place.

If this sounds OK I would suggest that Gale's students take on the reshelving, once they have a chance to get things straight back in Periodicals. Neal's students will be very busy with shifting and shelving the books being relocated to the stacks.

E-journal records

We're experimenting with including coverage information in the e-journals records.

Because of the problems with Millenium earlier in the week, currently only about 1/2 the e-journal bib records are loaded. Beverly was going to purge and re-load the records tonight but can't cause the server will be down for another reason. She will purge and reload tomorrow morning
We can go back to the old display when we reload again if needed.

Paying Library Fines and Fees

The long awaited dream of taking fee payments online is a reality, thanks to much hard work by Christy, Amanda, Valerie, and others.

Starting Thursday, Jan 13, fees may be paid as follows:
  • Cash: In person during library hours.
  • Check or money order: In person during library hours, or mailed to Gwen's attention.
  • Credit/Debit (AmEx, Visa, MC): Online through Marketplace. The link to Marketplace is on the Circulation web page at http://library.mtsu.edu/circulation and says "Pay Library Fines." Patrons will need to know fine amount and M Number to pay online..

If patrons have questions, please refer them to Circulation. If YOU have questions, ask Christy or leave a comment here.

Where are the reference books

Until shelves are removed from the front tier of reference and added to the back tier, and we start shifting again, the location for reference books is as follows:

000 - 770 In81 On the remaining reference shelves

770 - 796.352 A156 On the trucks lined up at the back of reference (lower numbers to the back)

796.352 - 809.04 C76 On shelves in Circulation (shelves nearest Peggy's office)

809 - 999 On last range of shelves in Periodicals, facing the back windows.
